Independent does not always mean small. Some UK bookmakers are family-run, some are privately owned giants, and others use third-party betting platforms while remaining separately licensed businesses. BetBuzz24 checks who actually owns each bookmaker before calling it independent.

Our definition: an independent bookmaker is not controlled by a major multi-brand gambling group such as Flutter, Entain or evoke. Sharing sportsbook technology with another operator does not automatically change that.

Sharing a Betting Platform Does Not Make Bookmakers the Same Company

Independent bookmakers do not need to build an entire sportsbook from scratch. Many licence technology from specialist suppliers for odds, account management, payments or the betting interface. That can make two sites look and behave alike even though they have different owners and separate UKGC licences.

Independent Bookmakers Can Disappear or Change Status Quickly

Independence can mean less corporate complexity, but it can also mean a smaller operator has less room to absorb regulatory or commercial problems. We therefore check current licence status rather than assuming an older bookmaker list is still accurate.

Licence surrendered

The Gambling Commission suspended BresBet's operating licence on 28 August 2026. BresBet Ltd then surrendered its operating licences on 4 September 2026. We would therefore not list BresBet as a currently licensed independent bookmaker.

Bet St George

Licence surrendered

Bet St George was suspended alongside BresBet in August 2026 and its operator subsequently surrendered the relevant Gambling Commission licence on 4 September 2026.

Gentleman Jim

Trading name inactive

The Gambling Commission register currently records Gentleman Jim Bookmakers as an inactive trading name under Lovell Brothers Limited, while DragonBet remains active. This is why historic platform lists should not automatically be treated as lists of bookmakers available today.

We do not classify a bookmaker from its branding or website design. The legal operator, ownership structure and technology relationship are checked separately.

Gambling Commission

We check the current legal operator, trading names, domains, licence status and relevant regulatory records on the UKGC public register .

Operator Legal Pages

Terms, privacy policies and legal footers help identify the company actually operating the sportsbook and sometimes name platform, payment or technology providers.

Companies House

UK company records can help establish directors, persons with significant control, company history and changes in ownership where the relevant operator is UK incorporated.

Corporate Records

Acquisition announcements, annual reports and company statements are checked where a brand has been sold, merged or moved between gambling groups.

Platform Relationship

We record shared technology separately. Using Playbook, EveryMatrix or another sportsbook supplier does not by itself prove common ownership.

Is bet365 an independent bookmaker?

Yes. bet365 is unusually large for an independent bookmaker, but it remains privately controlled rather than being owned by Flutter, Entain, evoke or another listed multi-brand gambling group. Independent therefore does not necessarily mean small.

Is Betfred independently owned?

Yes. Betfred was founded by Fred Done in 1967 and remains controlled by the Done family. Its scale and large retail estate make it very different from a small regional bookmaker, but its ownership remains independent of the major listed betting groups.

Are bookmakers using the same betting platform sister sites?

Not necessarily. Two bookmakers may use Playbook, EveryMatrix or another technology supplier while having different owners and separate UKGC licences. BetBuzz24 only describes bookmakers as genuine sister sites when there is a verified ownership or operating relationship.

Are independent bookmakers better for winning bettors?

Not automatically. Some specialist independents use human trading desks or focus on larger racing bets, but independent ownership does not guarantee higher limits or protection from account restrictions. Each bookmaker's current trading policy needs to be assessed separately.
